Live Life On Your Own Terms: Why It’s Important, and How To Begin
To live life on your own terms would be an incredible achievement for most people. What does it mean to start living your life on your own terms? How do we get started, and better yet, why is it so important to be doing this?
I strive to do this on a daily basis. Just like anyone else, I come into contact with my fair share of challenges when it comes to living the life that I want to live. This includes the fact that a lot of other people want us to do the things that they want us to do.
We need to break free from this and create life on our terms, not one that is made up by someone else’s mind for us.
What Does It Mean To Live Life On Your Own Terms?
The answer to this question is going to be different depending on the person that you ask. At the core of the matter though, you will find the same principles.
A life on your own terms consists of doing what you want to do, with passion and purpose, so that you can live a meaningful and fulfilling life. This allows you to be the best version of yourself so that you can live your best life possible.
Many people in our world go through life feeling full of anxiety and depression because they don’t adhere to these concepts for themselves. A lot of this is caused by feelings of overwhelment. When we feel overwhelmed, we feel stuck and unable to release ourselves from our troubles.
If you are overwhelmed, it may be triggered by family life, a spouse, a relationship, a job that you hate, or a particular circumstance that remains persistent no matter what you do. It is super important that you release yourself from this negativity as soon as possible.
The longer that you remain in a negative thought pattern, the harder it is going to be to break.
So now the question is, “What do I do to start to live life on my own terms?” Luckily, I have some insights that will help you to start doing this as soon as possible.
How To Live Life On Your Own Terms
I like to promote a well rounded approach to living life on your own terms. When we satisfy the entire essence of who we are, we are more likely to continue doing what we need to do because it feels good, in entirety.
I will break it down into 3 easy steps that you can start doing immediately.
Step 1 – Deciding What Your Dream Life Looks Like
The first thing that we need to do is decide what it means to live our dream life. What would your life look life if it was on your terms? Who are the people that you surround yourself with? How about your job, or career, what does that look like? What types of activities would you do on a consistent basis?
Figuring out these kinds of details will start the fire within your soul to start doing what you need to do. Believe it or not, many people have no clue what their best life would look like. When we don’t have a plan or an idea, then unfortunately nothing happens.
Spend some time brainstorming and figuring out what your dream life would look like. Be honest with yourself. It doesn’t need to be perfect at this stage. The person who you would love to be today could change tomorrow, and that is okay.
Step 2 – Discover Your Mental Blocks
This step is huge for a lot of people. It can be very revealing, and you need to keep an open mind about it. Most people don’t like to be wrong, but this is exactly what can be holding you back from living a life on your own terms.
We don’t need to do anything about our mental blocks here, we simply just need to observe them. By observing them, we are acknowledging that they exist. This allows them to move on if we don’t need them anymore. Sometimes, mental blocks can be cleared by simply noticing that they are there.
Be honest with yourself here and think of anything that could be holding you back from living life on your own terms. List people, situations, places, employment, ideas, concepts…anything that can be stopping you right now from living the way that you want to.
Remember, when we simply observe these mental blocks, it is enough to start the process of releasing them.
Step 3 – Take Inspired Action
Here is the most important part that people forget to do. Due to the fact that we can become so “stuck” in a life that has become routine for us, it is easy to forget where we want to go. Remember Step 1? Keep you dream life in mind and start figuring out ways that you can take action to get there.
Literally, you can do anything here.
Do anything that inspires you towards achieving your goals. The worst thing that you can do is sit and wait for it to arrive. The universe needs some sort of signal from you that you are ready to achieve what you want. There is no better way to do this than to show that you are inspired and ready to act upon what you received.
